If signing Mo Wilkerson to a long-term contract wasn’t enough for the New York Jets in free agency, then this contract drama with Jets QB Ryan Fitzpatrick is a whole other beast. Fitzpatrick was recently seen at a golf event this week, and gave some news reporters a short, simple response regarding his contract discussions with the Jets.
“Not right now.”
It’s recently come to light that Ryan Fitzpatrick has also failed to renew the lease on his New Jersey house, and declined any further comment at the celebrity golf tournament. Sometimes no news is news itself, especially with training camp approaching on July 27. If Fitzpatrick’s agent Jimmy Sexton doesn’t like the contract that pays his QB $10M in 2016 and $24M over the next three seasons, a line has to be drawn eventually. Although this stalemate is expected to potentially bleed into the first or second week of training camp, contract drama is the last thing the Jets need right now.
Our SportsGuru NYSMITTY (and perhaps the Jets organization) firmly believes that Geno Smith would be a capable replacement as starting QB. But with Fitzpatrick playing some of the best football of his career last year, it remains to be seen what the end result looks like out of contract purgatory.
