After an event filled Thursday afternoon, USA Olympic gymnasts Simone Biles and Aly Raisman take the gold and silver respectively in the Women’s Individual All-Around Finals for gymnastics. Biles and Raisman recently won the Team All-Around finals alongside their teammates Gabby Douglas, Laurie Hernandez, and Madison Kocian with a huge margin of over 8 points – a historically large margin that cements this USA team as one of the greatest of all time.
The 2016 Olympics mark US gymnastics coach Martha Karolyi’s final games. Karolyi, along with her husband Bela, have coached in several past games with much success. Most notably, they were coaches and mentors to Nadia Comaneci: the first woman to score a perfect 10 in gymnastics history. While the perfect-10 era of scoring is now gone in the sport of gymnastics, it’s not hard to see sheer dominance when you’re a 4’8″ dynamo with incredible spring, bounce, and power.
When Martha was asked whether Biles would surpass Comaneci, she avoided the question – but she did admit that she had never saw Biles ascension to the top five years ago. Biles, only 19, is in the prime of her gymnastics career and might even compete for a second Olympics in 2020 just like her teammate Aly.
