The 2017 NBA summer league brought excitement and hope to frustrated fans across the nation. As a whole, the summer league ended up being much more exciting than the NBA regular season. We got a glimpse of many of the NBA’s future stars, and they did not disappoint. There were many breakout performances from players like Lonzo Ball (who recovered from what his father called his worst game ever with a triple double), and Dennis Smith, who showed he is an elite point guard in this draft class. However, despite all of the excitement, there was disappointment from some players. The Bulls did not get much production out of 2017 first round pick Lauri Markkanen and their 2016 pick Denzel Valentine. The future does not look good for the Bulls, who traded away their star player Jimmy Butler, to the Timberwolves. Knicks first round pick Frank Ntilikina and Hornets first round pick Malik Monk were not able to see the court during summer league play because of injury. Among the biggest surprises of the summer league was Lakers rookie Kyle Kuzma, who scored 30 points while guiding the Lakers to a summer league championship. Overall the summer league was a nice break from the normally monotonous and insignificant NBA regular season.
Here is a fan’s take on the talent and depth of the 2017 NBA draft class:
